Design & Technology

Our Vision:

At St Mary and St Margaret’s we believe that D&T prepares children to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. The subject encourages children to become autonomous and creative problem-solvers both as individuals and as part of a team. It enables them to identify needs and opportunities and to respond by developing, designing, making and evaluating products and systems.

DT School Principles:

For children to:

  1. develop creative, technical and practical expertise
  2.  apply knowledge, understanding & skills to design and make prototypes
  3.  be able to evaluate their ideas & suggest improvement
  4. understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

Key concepts:

  • Research
  • Design
  • Make
  • Evaluate

Design & Technology in the Early Years:

Design & Technology is fully embedded in the EYFS Curriculum and children have regular opportunities to explore and engage in a range of creative activities to help them progress towards meeting the ELG (Early Learning Goal):  Expressive Arts & Design

  • Safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.
  • Share their creations, explaining the process they have used.
  • Make use of props and materials when role playing characters in narratives and stories
